Alice Hall

Prof. Hall joined Georgia Southern University in 1999 and retired in 2026.

 

 — Biography from the 2026 Spring Commencement program — 

Dr. Hall earned her BS from Virginia Tech (1983), her MEd from James Madison University (1988), and her PhD from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (1999). Throughout her career, Dr. Hall has always been committed to the care, education, and enrichment of young children and youth in childcare and youth development programs. She has served in several administrative roles during her tenure, including three-time Interim Director of the Georgia Southern Child Development Center. Dr. Hall was the co-investigator of a US Department of Education CCAMPIS Grant that was instrumental in adding infant and toddler childcare to Georgia Southern’s former Family Life Center as well as providing low-cost childcare for our students. She has also served as Program Coordinator for Human Development and Family Science for eight years and has been recognized within Georgia and nationally for her expertise in early childhood education and youth development. From 2012-2015, she served on the Executive Board of the National After School Association (NAA), and she has served on four different task force work groups for the Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning (DECAL) to revise Workforce Knowledge and Competencies. Dr. Hall has 23 peer-reviewed publications. In addition, she has made numerous international, national, state, regional, and invited presentations to professional organizations such as NAA, NAEYC, GAEYC, and the GAASYD conference. Dr. Hall has mentored Honors students and undergraduate students on research projects, with her most recent publication (2025) including three undergraduate students who helped her examine the benefits of service learning in youth development programs. Dr. Hall started the HDFS/CHFD student organization in 2013 to inform future child and family development professionals of conference, internship, career, and civic engagement opportunities. Dr. Hall was a resident scholar for an Alternative Spring Break trip to Roanoke, Virginia in March 2019, serving as adult mentor for participating students. For 21 years, Dr. Hall has taught an HDFS class where students became the Lead Teacher in one of the preschool classrooms in the Child Development Center, providing experiential learning in a preschool classroom. Many of these HDFS students are now preschool teachers or working for DECAL. During her 26 years at Georgia Southern, Dr. Hall has won three service awards: from the School of Human Ecology (2013), the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences (2021) and the College of Health and Human Services (2006), all due to her commitment to serve the university and the community.  She was elected to the Faculty Senate and the Academic Standards, Faculty Welfare, and University Athletic Committees and volunteered with Conversations with Professors, Day for Southern/ Love of Blue, and Operation Move-In.  She has been a Faculty Marshall at Commencement and served on 14 major review committees as well as the Awards and Curriculum committees. Her service to the Statesboro community includes being a member of the Teal House, Boys and Girls Club, and Wesley Foundation boards at various times in the past 26 years. For service to the university, the college and department, her students, and community, Dr. Alice Hall is deserving of the title Professor of Human Development and Family Science Emerita and Program Coordinator Emerita.*
