About

Prof. Amonette joined Georgia Southern University in 1998 and retired in 2022.

— Biography from the 2022 Spring Commencement program —

Dr. Amonette earned a BS in Biology and Chemistry (1992) from Western Kentucky University and an MS (1995) and Ph.D. (1998) with a specialization in Physical Chemistry from the Ohio State University. For more than 20 years, Dr. Amonette has been a beloved faculty member at Georgia Southern University. Her students welcomed her instruction and positive impact on their learning in the classroom and laboratory. She was committed to student success both inside and outside the classroom and was always willing to lend a supportive hand to anyone. Dr. Amonette's scholarship was focused on the use of x-ray difraction to solve complicated chemical problems. Central to this work was the inclusion of students in her research eforts. Structural analysis by x-ray crystallography provides information on the threedimensional orientation of chemical and biochemical systems to understand their properties. Her research with students contributed to the vast knowledge base necessary to understand these chemical structures. She believes this work with students is critical because it gives them hands-on experience with analytical tools used extensively in industry and other research universities. Tis work resulted in more than 16 publications and multiple funded grants during her tenure at Georgia Southern University. Dr. Amonette's teaching, service and scholarly accomplishments at Georgia Southern University have been longstanding and impactful, making her recognition as Associate Professor Emerita of Chemistry well deserved.*
