About

Amy E. Potter has a Ph.D. in Geography from Louisiana State University, an M.A. in Geography and a B.S. in Journalism both from the University of Kansas. She is an Assistant Professor in Geography in the Department of Geology and Geography at Georgia Southern University in Savannah, Georgia.

Her primary research interests center on the Caribbean (particularly Barbuda) and the U.S. South.

Her dissertation entitled Transnational Spaces and Communal Land Tenure in a Caribbean Place: “Barbuda is for Barbudans” focused on the intricate connections between transnational migration and land tenure on the island of Barbuda. For this work, she received Honorable Mention for the Louisiana State University Graduate School Distinguished Dissertation Award.  She has since continued to build on her dissertation work, shifting to larger concerns of climate change in a collaborative capacity with ongoing fieldwork with colleagues from Brooklyn College, New York and community scholars on Barbuda.

Potter is also now part of a larger collaborative team (Dr. David Butler, University of Southern Mississippi; Dr. Derek Alderman, University of Tennessee; Dr. Steve Hanna, University of Mary Washington; Dr. Perry Carter, Texas Tech University; and Dr. Arnold Modlin, Norfolk State University) that was awarded a National Science Foundation Grant in July 2014 entitled “Transformation of American Southern Commemorative Landscapes,” that will compare three major plantation regions including the Lowcountry area of coastal Georgia and South Carolina, the James River area in Virginia and the River Road District in southern Louisiana.
