About

Aslan Bio

Dr. Asli Aslan is the Founding Director of the Institute for Water and Health (IWH) and a Professor of Environmental Health Sciences at Georgia Southern University, where she builds interdisciplinary research enterprises at the intersection of water quality, public health, and environmental systems. Since founding IWH in 2022, she has secured and managed $6.4 million in active research funding, including over $2 million in bipartisan congressional appropriations for her Safe Water Together initiative, and grown the institute into three integrated units spanning an Environmental Research and Services Laboratory (ERSL), a Hydrological Modeling and Risk Assessment (HYDRA) unit, and a water sciences education unit (Water Academy), serving K-16 schools, environmental professionals, and public. She has expanded IWH's network to more than 65 partners across government, industry, and academia, established research affiliations with 35 faculty across four universities, and launched international collaborations in Ireland, the United Kingdom, France, Portugal, Turkiye, Ghana, Honduras, and Brazil.

Dr. Aslan's research career spans more than two decades, from postdoctoral and research faculty positions at Michigan State University to founding an international consortium of 41 laboratories across 28 countries to standardize water microbiology methods. She has authored 38 peer-reviewed publications that have been cited over 1,500 times, and her scholarship on microbial water quality, source tracking, and rapid diagnostics has directly informed drinking water policy as a subcommittee member of the U.S. EPA Science Advisory Board.

Dr. Aslan earned her Ph.D. and M.Sc. in Physical Oceanography and Marine Biology from Istanbul University's Institute for Marine Sciences and Management. A co-founder and past chair of the American Public Health Association's Water and Health Committee, she remains an active voice in national and international water-health policy, mentoring the next generation of researchers while translating scientific vision into lasting institutional capacity. Her team's current work was recognized with a nationally recognized social impact award from Public-Private Partnership (P3) in 2025.
