Dr. Atef Shalan is an Assistant Professor of Information Technology in Allen E. Paulson College of Engineering and Computing of Georgia Southern University, Statesboro GA. He received his PhD in computer science from Queen’s University, Kingston, Ontario, Canada, where he belonged to the Queen’s Reliable Software Technology (QRST) research group and Software Engineering Research Lab (SERL). His MSc degree in Artificial Intelligence was obtained at Lakehead University, Thunder bay, Ontario, Canada. He has been serving at higher education institutions for the past decade through Georgia Southern University, and previously Alderson Broaddus University (AB), Philippi WV, Bucknell University (BU), Lewisburg PA, and Umm Al-Qura University (UQU), Macca, Saudi Arabia. Throughout the years of industrial experience in the field of software engineering and information technology, he has served in a number of national and international organizations including software manufacturers, consulting firms, and business organizations.
Dr. Shalan’s research focuses on system reliability and security with emphasis on software architectural design, re-engineering, system monitoring, fault tolerance, and failure prediction techniques. His scholarly activities include publishing research articles, public talks, tutorials, and short courses at national and international venues. Dr. Shalan’s research is highly influenced by the new software technology transitions with respect to their impacts on the architectural complexity and execution intricacy. The practical implications of his work involve understanding the dynamic behavior and ensuring the dependability of software systems and Web applications. His research provides software researchers and practitioners the skills needed to assess and achieve reliable software technologies.

Dr. Shalan’s teaching involves introductory and advanced courses at both graduate and undergraduate levels. He has been leading curriculum design, degree program creation, and planning. His academic services include program reviews, participation in professional committees, advising and mentoring students, supervising graduation projects, participating in community work and public outreach, industry engagement, State-level planning, organizing student events, and applying the latest Quality-Matters Rubric to review and improve online course offerings at the institution level. His teaching includes Python, Java, and C++ programming, Web and mobile app. development, data structures and algorithms, database management, data analytics, software engineering, computer organization, operating systems, computer networks, cyber security, and others.

The professional accomplishments of Dr. Shalan in the IT industry have spanned software design and development, business process analysis and implementation, and project planning and management. his software development projects involved small to large systems and spread across multiple business areas including manufacturing, distribution, accounting, and real estate management. He has been repeatedly recognized for developing innovative solutions and achieving customer appreciation through product efficiency, interface simplicity, and support persistence. His industry projects have contributed to the business process automation with minimal processing time and user intervention, delicate deliverable and documentations, and highly precise computations and results.
