Teaching philosophy
Educators who create engaging environments that encourage students to explore ideas, collaborate, and develop a sense of belonging, have informed my approach to promoting a student-centered experience. I focus on producing a high-quality educational experience that helps my students gain confidence in their own abilities while maintaining a sense of curiosity and play. I offer students an opportunity to participate in course embedded undergraduate research projects and apply the scientific method. I use games to build trust, increase engagement, and provide on the spot assessment of concepts. I also utilize an instructional delivery strategy to teach students note-taking skills that they didn’t have a chance to practice before college.
Research interests
My research focuses on soil ecology and ecosystem functioning, with particular emphasis on how soil microbial communities and soil organisms drive decomposition and nutrient cycling. Across multiple systems, my work examines how biological and chemical processes in soils interact with plants, land use, and climate to influence soil organic matter dynamics, biodiversity, and overall ecosystem health. A main research interest is linking belowground biological processes to aboveground outcomes, and investigating the relationship between the soil biota and important ecosystem services.
