— Biography from the 2025 Spring Commencement program —
Dr. Liston earned a BA (1983) from the University of Oklahoma, an MA (1986) from Florida State University, and a PhD (1994) from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. While serving as a Professor at Georgia Southern, she also earned an MSW (2014) from Savannah State University. At Georgia Southern, Dr. Liston has demonstrated excellence in teaching, research, and service since accepting a position as Assistant Professor within the former Department of Educational Foundations and Curriculum in 1994. Dr. Liston has demonstrated a strong commitment to both undergraduate and graduate student learning at Georgia Southern. During her 30-year tenure at Georgia Southern, Dr. Liston participated in and took the lead in significant changes to teaching. She was among the first at the university to teach online courses. Also, in collaboration with Professor Emerita Jane Page, she conceptualized and brought to fruition, the innovative hybrid online/face-to-face format for delivery of the EdD Curriculum Studies Program in 2001. Dr. Liston served as Program Director for the EdD Curriculum Studies Program during two intervals. Over the course of her career, Dr. Liston taught 23 different courses ranging from undergraduate educational foundations courses, to Multicultural Education and Curriculum Theories and Design at the masters level, as well as 19 different courses at the doctoral level. In addition to teaching assigned courses, Dr. Liston has mentored students through chairing and serving on many dissertation committees. Mentoring scholars has been the cornerstone of her teaching practice at the graduate level throughout her academic career, as evidenced by the numerous presentations and publications with students and graduates of the EdD Curriculum Studies program. Additionally, Dr. Liston’s work with the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) has highlighted the importance of teachers as learners as well as scholars. Over the course of her tenure at Georgia Southern, Dr. Liston maintained a consistent record of service, reviewing manuscripts for books, chapters, journals, and conferences. Additionally, Dr. Liston served as co-editor for the International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning since 2016. During the past 30 years, Dr. Liston served on numerous university, college and departmental committees. At the university level, Dr. Liston served for a decade, reviewing protocols for the Institutional Review Board. She also served on the Senate Executive Committee. Over the course of her academic career, Dr. Liston maintained a consistent and growing record of scholarship, through numerous conference presentations as well as publications of journal articles, book chapters and books. Dr. Liston prioritized researching and publishing with emerging scholars, especially students and graduates from the EdD in Curriculum Studies. Her curriculum vitae demonstrates this commitment: of the 94 conference presentations during her career, 55 are copresented with students and/or graduates from Georgia Southern’s College of Education; of 6 books she published, 3 are coauthored with a graduate of the EdD Curriculum Studies Program; of the 34 articles and chapters, 12 are coauthored with students and graduates of the EdD Curriculum Studies Program. For these and other contributions to the department, college, university, and profession, Dr. Delores Liston has earned the title of Professor Emerita of Curriculum Studies and Social Foundations.*
