Prof. Mooney joined Georgia Southern University in 1989 and retired in 2025.

Dr. Mooney earned his doctorate BBA (1978), MAcc (1979), and PhD (1989) from the University of Georgia. Before joining Georgia Southern University in 1989, he worked for several years in the information systems organization of a major telecommunications firm. His thirty-six-year tenure at the university concludes a distinguished career marked by dedicated service, exemplary leadership, and significant contributions in the field of accounting and business education. During his tenure as Director of the School of Accountancy, Dr. Mooney led the hiring of a dozen new faculty, significantly grew the graduate accounting program, including an emphasis area in forensic accounting, and created the annual Meet-the-Firms career fair, now a signal event in its twenty-fifth year. Under his guidance as Faculty Advisor for Beta Alpha Psi, the Georgia Southern chapter consistently achieved the international accounting honor society's highest status. As director of graduate programs and MBA director for the Parker College of Business, Dr. Mooney spearheaded the expansion and enhancement of the MBA program, including a curriculum redesign and the implementation of an innovative professional development program that features professional coaching and networking opportunities. Furthermore, his efforts were pivotal in maintaining the program's accreditation and high standards. Dr. Mooney's research interests in performance evaluation systems and emerging academic and professional issues have resulted in numerous publications contributing to the advancement of the accounting profession. His external leadership roles, including serving as Chair of the Georgia Society of CPAs, further underscore his commitment to professional development and his impact on the accounting field at both the state and national levels. Throughout his career, Dr. Mooney has received numerous accolades for his dedication to teaching and service, including the Georgia Southern University Award of Excellence in Leadership, the Outstanding Accounting Educator award from the Georgia Society of CPAs, the Beta Alpha Psi Outstanding Advisor award, and the Parker College of Business Bishop Award for Sustained Excellence. Most recently, he was honored with the Bruce Yawn Lifetime Achievement Award by the StatesboroBulloch County Chamber of Commerce. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the university and the profession, Dr. Julian Lowell Mooney is most deserving of the title of Professor Emeritus of Accounting at Georgia Southern University.*
