Prof. Belcher joined Georgia Southern University in 2016 and retired in 2024.

Dr. Belcher earned a BSEd (1974) and MST (1978) from Georgia Southern College, a BSB (2006) from Auburn University, and a PhD (1988) from Augusta University. He has been employed with the University System of Georgia (USG) since 2005. Initially, Dr. Belcher was employed at the College of Coastal Georgia in Brunswick GA, serving as Dean for the School of Math and Science and tenured professor in the Department of Natural Sciences. Subsequently, he became the Dean of the School of Arts and Sciences and retained status as a tenured professor within the Department of Biology. He remained the Dean and served as the Director of the Clinical Laboratory Technology program at the College of Coastal Georgia until 2016. In 2016, he accepted the position of tenured Full Professor and Program Coordinator of the Medical Laboratory Science program at Armstrong State University. He has held the position of a tenured full professor for over 19 years in the University System of Georgia. He completed a postdoctoral residency in Public Health and Medical Microbiology at The Medical College of Virginia/Virginia Commonwealth University. Additionally, he holds certification from The American Society of Clinical Pathologists as a certified Medical Laboratory Scientist as well as certification as a Specialist in Microbiology. Over the course of his career, Dr. Belcher has completed multiple publications and presentations in his area of expertise. Since arriving at Georgia Southern University in 2016, he has been awarded a HRSA grant totaling $3.25 million to support disadvantaged students in the Medical Laboratory Science program and an ASCP Foundational Laboratory Science Educational Grant for the development of an international collaboration between Georgia Southern’s Medical Laboratory Science program and similar programs in Sweden and the Czech Republic. As the program coordinator for Medical Laboratory Sciences, he has also ensured the continued accreditation of Georgia Southern’s Medical Laboratory Sciences degree program. In recognition of his contributions to Georgia Southern and to his academic and professional communities, Dr. Belcher is deserving of the title Professor Emeritus of Medical Laboratory Science.*
