— Biography from the 2024 Fall Commencement program —
Mrs. Thompson earned an ADN Nursing (1980) from Shoreline Community College, a BS in Health Care Management (1987) from the University of LaVerne, and an MSN Nursing (2004) from the University of Phoenix. Since joining Georgia Southern University twelve years ago, Mrs. Thompson has focused on teaching and supporting new student nurses as they have adapted to the culture of a rigorous program. She has led or co-lead teaching Foundational Clinical Skills I in the Skills Lab, and students have consistently noted that her student-centered focus and teaching style has given them increased confidence to succeed. Mrs. Thompson has incorporated high fidelity simulation using life-like mannequins in her teaching to better enhance student learning. It has been Mrs. Thompson's privilege to work with the graduating senior nursing students as a Nurse Liaison, allowing her to see their growth in confidence and in their ability to use clear clinical judgment and give compassionate patient care. She was active in working groups during the consolidation of Georgia Southern and Armstrong, and during the successful accreditation by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing. Mrs. Thompson has served on the Clinical committee, the Awards and Recognition committee, and on the Evaluation committee for the School of Nursing and represented it as a Senator, a member of the Senate Executive Council and as Chair of its Elections committee. She has served the university with yearly participation in Conversations with Professors, in recruitment events for new students, and in high school honor student interviews. Mrs. Thompson was the clinical lead for the student nurses who participated in five drivethrough Covid vaccination clinics for the community. She has volunteered for community-focused health care activities including the Kiwanis Fair and blood pressure clinics. Mrs. Thompson is a member of the Georgia Association of Nurse Educators and serves as Chair of its Awards Committee. For these contributions to her students, her discipline, and her community, Mrs. Thompson is deserving of the title Clinical Instructor Emerita of Nursing.*
