— Biography from the 2021 Fall Commencement program —
Dr. Hoell earned his PhD in Industrial Relations from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1998, preceded by degrees in Human Resource Management and Labor Relations (MSBA, 1993) and English (BA, 1985). As a faculty member, Dr. Hoell moved from American University to Georgia Southern as an assistant professor of management in 2000, was promoted to associate professor in 2008, and served as the inaugural chair of the Department of Management from 2014-2019. Prior to his administrative role, he was recognized within the college of business for both his teaching (Crider Award for Excellence in Teaching, 2009) and service (Nesmith Faculty Award for Distinguished Service, 2012) accomplishments. Dr. Hoell was active within several practitionerbased organizations, including serving as the faculty advisor for the Georgia Southern University Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) chapter, as well as taking on leadership roles for the Labor and Employment Relations Association, the InternationalAssociation for Human Resource Information Management, and the Savannah chapter of SHRM. As a department chair, Dr. Hoell was instrumental in creating and maintaining a strong culture of support and collegiality, one that will hopefully serve as a lasting legacy from his efforts. For these and numerous other contributions to the department, college, University, and profession, Dr. Robert C. Hoell is deserving of the title of Associate Professor Emeritus of Management.*
