Prof. Carey joined Georgia Southern University in 2013 and retired in 2024.

Dr. Carey graduated with her BSN (1993) and MS Nursing (1999) from Wright State University College of Nursing and Health and her DNP (2015) from Georgia Southern University. She was a Pediatric Intensive Care nurse for several years and upon earning her MS Nursing was the Trauma Program Manager at the Children’s Medical Center in Dayton, Ohio, where she also led pediatric clinicals for the Wright State University College of Nursing and Health. She moved to Savannah Georgia in 2003 to be the Clinical Nurse Specialist for the Children’s Hospital at Memorial Health University Medical Center. She started as a parttime pediatric clinical instructor for Georgia Southern University School of Nursing in 2004. In 2013, she started the DNP program at Georgia Southern and became a full-time instructor for the School of Nursing. She was one of the first Clinical Nurse Specialists in Georgia to become a licensed as an Advanced Practice Nurse (APRN). She maintained certification as a Critical Care RN (CCRN) until 2013 and is currently certified as a Clinical Nurse Specialist. In 2016, she was appointed to the rank of Assistant Professor. She maintained casual employment at the Children’s Hospital until 2017 when she became the director of the RN-BSN program at Georgia Southern’s School of Nursing. She was promoted to Associate Professor in 2022. Dr. Carey has served as a mentor to numerous undergraduate students and on several DNP project committees. She held the offices of Counselor and Vice President in the Sigma Theta Tau nursing honor society, Mu Kappa chapter on the Statesboro Campus and President of the consolidated Savannah and Statesboro Rho Psi chapters, facilitating induction of student and community members. Dr Carey has been active in several Professional Nursing organizations, including the American Association of Critical Care Nurses, the American Nurses Association, the Society of Pediatric Nurses, National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners, and Sigma Theta Tau. She has presented her work at multiple annual conferences for these organizations and published articles in the Journal of Pediatric Healthcare and the American Journal of Nursing. Dr Carey represents Georgia Southern’s RN-BSN program in the statewide RN-BSN consortium, where she serves on the Curriculum Leadership Council. The RN-BSN program has continued to flourish under her direction and has graduated many students who have gone on to earn graduate degrees in nursing. In recognition of her contributions to Georgia Southern and to her academic and professional communities, Dr. Carey is deserving of the title Associate Professor Emerita of Nursing.
