Prof. Timothy Pearson passed away on July 28, 2020 after complications with COVID-19.

Dr. Pearson was the professor and director of the School of Accountancy at Georgia Southern University. Previously he served as coordinator of graduate accounting programs and chair of the Department of Accounting and Management Information Systems at West Virginia University. He was a CPA, CFF and received his BS, MAcc, and PhD from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. He was Executive Director Emeritus of the Institute for Fraud Prevention (IFP), an industry supported research center housed at West Virginia University founded by the ACFE and AICPA. His work with the IFP was featured in the cover story of the Jan/Feb 2010 edition of Fraud Magazine. Dr. Pearson conducted funded research sponsored by PwC, LexisNexis, the National Institute of Justice, the National Library of Medicine and the National Science Foundation.

He was engaged in a variety of research projects. His research included for example: anti-fraud research and education, examination of the supply and demand components in the market for audit and related services, performance measurement for regulated industries including charitable organizations and financial institutions. He also participated in research on identity management, biometrics, privacy & trust in online environments, internal controls and information security. He made numerous academic and professional presentations on these subjects. He published his research in refereed journals including Contemporary Accounting Research, Journal of Accounting and Public Policy, Issues in Accounting Education, Journal of Public Budgeting, Accounting and Finance, Law Enforcement Forum and the CPA Journal.

His experience teaching includes a wide number of subjects in accounting and business however most recently he taught courses including Personal Branding for First Year Business Students, Auditing, Ecommerce, IT Auditing, Computer Forensic, Fraud Data Analysis, Forensic Accounting and Accounting Information Systems. Pearson was a board member of the Federation of Schools of Accountancy and served on the Accounting Program Leadership Group’s Strategic Planning Task Force. He served as program chair for Forensic and Investigative Accounting’s section meeting for 2013 and was the Acting Editor of the Journal of Forensic Studies in Accounting and Business. He was a peer review volunteer for AACSB accreditation visits. He also was a member of the Association of Certified Fraud Examiner’s Higher Education Committee and the Association of Certified Financial Crime Specialists. He also was on the Financial Executives International Governance, Risk and Compliance Task Force. He served as president and board member for the WV Tax Institute.
