About
Dr. Reynolds received a BA (1975) from Roberts Wesleyan College, an MSEd (1980) from State University of New York at Brockport and an Ed.D. (1986) from the University of Rochester. Dr. Reynolds has taught for 48 years, 26 of those years at Georgia Southern University. Before joining the faculty at Georgia Southern University in 1997 in the former Department of Curriculum, Foundations and Research (now the Department of Curriculum, Foundations and Reading), Dr. Reynolds taught English at Romulus Central School and Red Creek Central School in New York. He also taught at University of Wisconsin-Stout, Oklahoma State University and Purdue University. He has been a visiting professor at McGill University, Lewis University, University of Calgary, California State University-East Bay and Seattle University. Dr. Reynolds has demonstrated excellence in teaching, research, and service. He has consistently received high praise for his teaching from both graduate and undergraduate students, notably on his ability to emphasize critical thinking, open, non-judgmental dialogue, and passion for education. His teaching at Georgia Southern remained consistently noteworthy for 26 years. Dr. Reynolds has authored, co-authored, edited and co-edited 14 books. Most notable in his book publications is the co-authored, Understanding Curriculum: An Introduction to the Study of Historical and Contemporary Curriculum Discourses. This book is internationally cited and published in multiple languages. He has also published 24 articles in refereed journals, and 38 book chapters. He has edited and co-edited 8 book series and 2 journals in education, most recently The International Journal of Critical Media Literacy. Dr. Reynolds has received awards for his research that include the 2004 Jack Miller College of Education Award for Outstanding Scholarship and Creative Activity and the 2014 American Educational Studies Association Critics Choice Book Award for A Curriculum of Place: Understandings Emerging through the Southern Mist. At the professional level, he has served in leadership positions in the American Educational Research Association in Division B - Curriculum Studies and in the special interest groups, Critical Issues in Curriculum and Cultural Studies and Paulo Freire. In addition to actively serving on numerous committees at the department, college, and university levels over the years (many as elected positions), Dr. Reynolds has also served as chairperson and/or member of 51 dissertation committees at Georgia Southern University and other universities in the United States, Canada, and Australia. Through these numerous publications and editorships and involvement with professional organizations and international advisement, Dr. Reynolds has brought international recognition to the Department of Curriculum, Foundations and Reading, The College of Education, and Georgia Southern University. For these many accomplishments and contributions to the department, the university, his profession and our students, Dr. William Reynolds has earned the title of Associate Professor Emeritus of Social Foundations and Curriculum Studies.*
