Prof. Liang joined Georgia Southern University in 2000 and retired in 2024.

Dr. Liang earned his BS (1983) and MS (1986) in Software from Fudan University and his PhD (1991) in Computer Science from the University of Oklahoma. He has served in academia for over 33 years, 24 of those years with Georgia Southern. Dr. Liang is an internationally-recognized scholar known throughout the discipline for his computing textbooks. He has published more than thirty books, which have been translated into six foreign languages and adopted by more than 300 universities worldwide. The publications have brought visibility and recognition to our great university. Additionally, he served as interim department chair of computer science. Recently he helped create the professional computer science graduate certificate program and served as the coordinator of the program. He is also a member of the exclusive “Java Champion” program, an advisory group to Oracle Corporation. With his outstanding service to student success, administration, and community, Dr. Laing is deserving of the title Professor Emeritus of Computer Science.*
