Abstract

The automation of the production lines with computer integrated manufacturing (CIM) by manufacturers to stay competitive in market is discussed. Trend among manufacturers today is to produce smaller batches of more varied products which is possible only with implementation of CIM. Without CIM automation, the trend would result in higher costs associated with increased setup time and additional labour. It is found that one of the main difficulty faced by manufacturers in implementing CIM is shortage of qualified CIM technicians.
