Abstract

This chapter describes a faculty online learning community (FOLC) that emerged around common interests regarding the preparation of prospective secondary teachers of mathematics (PST-M). This community, called GeT: A Pencil, focuses on “Geometry for Teachers” (GeT) courses—university-level geometry courses required for PST-M. Systemic factors underlie challenges to improving GeT courses. Drawing on research about faculty learning communities and networked improvement science, we illustrate how GeT: A Pencil exemplifies a cross-institutional FOLC working incrementally toward systemic change. We further suggest how principles of networked improvement can support faculty development as part of systems-oriented improvement in undergraduate STEM education.
