Abstract
An inexpensive and easy way of simplifying NMR spectrum of benzocaine was presented. A small quantity of deuterated benzene to the benzocaine sample in deuterated chloroform was added to simplify the spectrum. The peak for the amine hydrogen shifts upfield. This means that the amine singlet and the quartet assigned to the methylene protons of the ethyl group were separated. This allowed the spectrum to be cleanly integrated and easily interpreted by NMR novices.
