Abstract

Sodium reduction of (t-BuC 5H 4) 2ZrCl 2 in diethyl ether gives [{(t-BuC 5H 4)(t- BuC 5H 3)Zr(μ-H)Na} 2·OEt 2] 2, 1, toluene extraction of 1 produces the self-assembled tetramer [{(t-BuC 5H 4)(t-BuC 5H 3)Zr(μ-H)Na} 2] 4, 2 (the Na 8Zr 8 linkage of 2 resembles the seams of a "tennis ball"). Both 1 and 2 are diamagnetic, which may be attributed to the presence of direct Zr-Zr bonds (Zr-Zr: 3.2930(16) Å (1), 3.3076(7) Å (2)).
