Abstract

Sodium reduction of (t-BuC ₅H ₄) ₂ZrCl ₂ in diethyl ether gives [{(t-BuC ₅H ₄)(t- BuC ₅H ₃)Zr(μ-H)Na} ₂·OEt ₂] ₂, 1, toluene extraction of 1 produces the self-assembled tetramer [{(t-BuC ₅H ₄)(t-BuC ₅H ₃)Zr(μ-H)Na} ₂] ₄, 2 (the Na ₈Zr ₈ linkage of 2 resembles the seams of a "tennis ball"). Both 1 and 2 are diamagnetic, which may be attributed to the presence of direct Zr-Zr bonds (Zr-Zr: 3.2930(16) Å (1), 3.3076(7) Å (2)).
