AI Ethics Regulation: Working Toward a Cohesive Approach in the United States

Abstract

This article summarizes recent federal activity in regulating artificial intelligence (AI) ethics. The United States (U.S.) government is currently in the process of implementing the National Artificial Intelligence Initiative Act of 2020. This act directs federal agencies to develop a cohesive U.S. public policy for regulating AI in the U.S. including big picture AI ethics policy for the U.S. At the time of publication, big picture goals and approaches will have been planned for and a basic regulatory structure planned. Details of implementation and the language of regulations will not yet have been determined. This article will cover recent developments, and immediate future planned action on the U.S. government’s current activities regulating artificial intelligence.
