Abstract

Algorithms increasingly shape how individuals search for and interact with digital platforms. However, much less work has focused on conceptualization, implementation, assessment, and ethical dimensions in Library and Information Science (LIS). The researchers conducted a systematic literature review of 30 articles within five years across five databases to explore the conceptualization, implementation, assessment, and ethical dimensions of algorithmic literacy in the field of LIS. The literature reveals five constructs in the conceptualization of algorithmic literacy, which were categorized into two constructs: cognitive (awareness, knowledge & and understanding) and behavioral and action-related dimensions (evaluation, use & apply, and create). The six distinctive ethical constructs: bias, transparency, privacy, accountability, accuracy, and non-maleficence; were identified from the literature. This study examines the conceptualization, implementation, assessment, and ethical dimensions of algorithmic literacy in LIS. This study provides insights into the current state and guides for the future research, informing policy and curriculum design for algorithmic literacy in LIS education. This study emphasized that algorithmic literacy is essential for managing online information services, supporting user engagement, and addressing ethical concerns in algorithmically mediated access.
