Abstract

In this chapter, you will explore what it means to teach math through an equity-focused lens and why it matters in your classroom. This chapter starts by looking at the Equity Literacy Framework alongside the equity-based practices for math teaching. Then it dives into noticing frameworks, which help you become more intentional about what you pay attention to in your classroom, how you interpret what you see, and how you respond. To put this all into practice in the context of teaching math, the FAIR Framework is introduced, which challenges common deficit-based thinking about students, their math abilities, and their communities. By the end of this chapter, you’ll have concrete tools to critically analyze classroom interactions, including those presented in the cases of the following chapters.
