Abstract

This chapter showcases a formative assessment that will help educators identify the strengths of young learners as they navigate responses to texts in classrooms. The Multimodal Literacy Profile (MLP) for Emergent Bilinguals captures understanding of story elements, visual representations of knowledge, and speaking, listening, and writing communication within multiple languages. The authors explain the theoretical framework for the MLP and give an in-depth analysis of three emergent bilingual children’s responses to fictional stories as a way to illustrate how the assessment tools work.
