Cases About Math Instructional Pedagogies and Tasks

Research output: Contribution to book or proceedingChapterpeer-review

Abstract

The cases in this chapter present teachers’ instructional decisions and math tasks they choose for their students to engage in when learning math content. Each case will provide some information on the content and the task, but the focus is on how students respond to the teachers’ instructional decisions. What math is offered to students and how teachers invite them to participate are the equity issues addressed. The cases are titled Case 5.1 Gender and Binary Story Problems, Case 5.2 Using Technology to Practice Place Value, Case 5.3 Overcoming Roadblocks in a “Race to Mastery,” Case 5.4 Comparing Fractions in Safe Spaces with Number Talks, and Case 5.5 Stuck in the Script. Following each case, you’ll find reflection questions to promote deeper thinking and critical analysis. These questions invite you to challenge your thinking and connect the case to your own classroom experiences.
