Abstract
As science teacher educators, we are charged with providing our teacher candidates the best possible pedagogical training we can. With the arrival of the new Common Core Standards and the development of the Next Generation Science Standards, finding ways in which we can enable our teacher candidates to provide powerful science learning standards which are also interdisciplinary and connect directly to important social issues is paramount (Klosterman, Mesa, & Milton, 2009; Sadler & Klosterman, 2009).
Used often in the social studies (Levstik & Barton, 2005), the role-play provides opportunities for fun, engaging, and most above all authentic (King, Newmann, & Carmichael, 2009) learning experiences. Furthermore, by choosing a topic with which elementary schoolers will relate and find engaging, science teacher educators can provide their teacher candidates with something practical, real-world, and likely to have a lasting impression on their formative pedagogical training.
This experiential session on the “Chocolate Choices” lesson will provide science teacher educators with a useful tool they can implement immediately in their methods classes to engage their teacher candidates in the development of a powerful repertoire of interdisciplinary teaching skills.
