Abstract

Underground coal fires exhale combustion gases and particulate matter into the atmosphere from surficial vents and fissures, whereas combustion gases and particulates are exhaled directly into the atmosphere from coal beds burning at the surface. Live vegetation sometimes occurs on the surface immediately adjacent to the vents and fissures, sometimes several centimeters inside of them (Figure 2.1.1) or adjacent to smoldering (not flaming) coal beds burning at the surface.
