Abstract

Backward facing step flows arise in many aerospace applications, such as wheel wells, weapons bays, and other fuselage openings for telescopes and sensors. Moreover, the backward facing step is also employed for enhanced turbulent mixing, such as turbulent combustion. In the present work the effect of the step on the combustion instabilities is computationally studied suing the large-eddy simulation approach. The computational 5 studies are performed for a Reynolds number Re 2.5~10 . The preliminary studies reveal that the step of the cavity influences the flow and combustion instabilities. An increased turbulent mixing is also observed.
