Abstract

Presentation given at the American Research Association Annual Meeting. <a href="http://www.aera.net/Portals/38/docs/Annual_Meeting/2011ProgramFullWeb.pdf" target="_self"> Program </a> Understanding boys’ perceptions of sexual harassment is vital to addressing sexism as it plays out in schools, since sexism undergirds and perpetuates both harassment and bullying. Hegemonic conceptualizations of sexuality and gender role expectations form the context within which girls and boys are harassed and bullied. campuses. This study examines how young men (18-20) define and understand ‘sexual harassment’ in contemporary school settings. As our previous research examining teachers’ perceptions of sexuality indicates the prevalence of hegemonic notions of sexuality regarding race and class, we also chose to focus on boys’ perceptions of their own notions of sexuality and gender expectations as influenced by race/ethnicity and class.
