Abstract
Paper presented at the annual meeting of the American Educational Research Association, San Antonio, TX.
The purpose of the study is to establish relevant evidence for the validity of a new brief scale designed to assess regulation of motivation. This brief scale, titled Brief Regulation of Motivation Scale (BRoMS), is more manageable to administer and intuitive to interpret compared to previous lengthy multidimensional scales. BRoMS is intended to serve as a global indicator of one’s tendency to use strategies that sustain or enhance motivation. Multiple sources of validity evidence are offered to evaluate the scale. BRoMS was unidimensional and the reliability was adequate. Regulation of motivation was closely related but distinct from other components of self-regulated learning. Motivational beliefs and attitudes predicted regulation of motivation, while regulation of motivation predicted lower procrastination and higher achievement.
