Abstract

Operating conditions in proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) cathodes make the carbon in the fuel cell components vulnerable to corrosion and surface oxidation. Graphitized and non-graphitized carbon blacks are used extensively in PEMFC electrodes, both as platinum support in the catalyst layers as well as in the macro-porous substrate and in the micro-porous layer components of the gas diffusion layer (GDL).
