Abstract

Summary form only given. A new multiphoton technique involving phase-matched third harmonic generation in unfocused laser beams has been used to determine vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) oscillator strengths for three levels in xenon and VUV absorption coefficients in mixtures of xenon with argon and krypton. In the experiments described, third harmonic light is produced on the high-frequency negatively dispersive side of three-photon resonances. By varying the ratio of the pressure of xenon to the pressure of the buffer gas, the phase-matching frequency can be chosen anywhere within the negatively dispersive region of a three photon resonance.
