Abstract

The number of trans and gender diverse (TGD) patients presenting at medical centers for gender-affirming treatment is increasing. The TGD community is a resilient population with unique needs. Physicians need to be culturally responsive in facilitating medical treatment that challenges anti-TGD bias in the medical setting. Thus, physicians must gain foundational knowledge to provide affirmative care so that TGD patient health outcomes—emotional and physical—may be improved. Further, physicians have the opportunity to challenge anti-TGD bias in the medical settings in which they work. Training staff in culturally responsive terminology, history, and TGD topics, such as sex, gender, and intersectionality, may facilitate improved patient interactions and health outcomes.
