Abstract
A perturbation theory on four-wave mixing with short pulses and optimized atomic coherence for a four level system is presented. A highly coherent mixture of ground state and an excited state was created with two transform limited nanosecond lasers. A laser with a short pulse with a suitable delay and a four-wave mixing was generated. It was shown the four-wave mixing field traveled with the speed of light in vacuum and suffered no pulse distortion even though the medium is highly dispersive at frequencies of the generated wave.
