Abstract

The effect of leadership on organizational outcomes is an intriguing issue that has yet to be fully understood. Despite substantial research conducted in large organizations, little work has focused on the effects of leadership in entrepreneurial firms. Thus, there is a gap in the literature since leadership is inextricably linked with entrepreneurship. Our study addresses the issue by examining the link between charismatic leadership and new venture performance. While anecdotal reports suggest a connection between charismatic leadership and entrepreneurial behavior, the overall impact of this leadership style on new venture performance is unclear. We bridge the gap by examining the following questions: (1) What behaviors do charismatic leaders possess that contribute to the attraction and retention of key organizational constituents that entrepreneurs must cultivate?, and (2) Are the skills and behaviors of charismatic leaders uniformly beneficial at all stages of new venture development?
