Abstract

We report on the experimental demonstration of a high-power (>100mW) quantum cascade superluminescent (SL) emitter employing a spiral cavity with a passive loop back facet. By replacing the rounded, wet-etched, antireflection coated back facet of a spiral cavity with a passive loop facet, the lasing action was suppressed (i.e., threshold current density increased) due to a decrease in the back facet reflectivity. This type of facet allowed us to achieve a twofold increase in the peak SL power by employing a 16-mm-long spiral cavity.
