Abstract
This study reexamines the determinant factors of hospital profitability in the state of Florida during the post-PPS era. In addition to using a more comprehensive sample of hospitals, we also include a number of economic and financial variables in our empirical design. Our empirical findings identify the following factors as significant determinants of hospital profitability: size, occupancy rate, profit status, competition, teaching status, and financial indebtedness. Based on piecewise linear regression methodology, significant nonlinearities are established in the relationships of certain factors to hospital profitability.
