Abstract

This project is a new partnership between Georgia Southern's College of Education, College of Science and Technology, and Glynn County Schools. The goal of the project is to prepare Glynn County Teachers to create and utilize authentic, mathematics learning experiences, which incorporate the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics and available instructional technologies. The learning experiences will be created using well-established instructional design models, current problem-based learning pedagogy, and meaningful uses of technology. Teacher participants will visit Glynn County businesses and industries, which utilize mathematics to establish meaningful contexts for the learning experiences they create. The project consists of a professional development experience for teachers, which include a five day summer workshop, followed by a period of electronic consultation between Georgia Southern University faculty and teacher participants, and two post-workshop meetings. Workshop participants will work in small groups with other participants, mathematics experts, instructional design and technology experts, and an expert on the Common Core Standards for Mathematics. The project is tentatively scheduled to begin June 2012 and end no later than January 2013.
