Abstract
The influence of the two-photon interference effect on phase-matched parametric four-wave mixing (PFWM) is considered. In this process, the two-photon Rabi frequency between a ground state and a two-photon resonant state creates a second two-photon Rabi rate, between the same two states, through the PFWM process. The second pathway destructively interferes with the first; that is, the two-photon pumping rate by the laser field is canceled out by the other two-photon Rabi rate due to PFWM, which is equal to magnitude but opposite in sign. Several theoretical and experimental consequences of this effect are discussed.
