abstract = "Phosphate glasses containing Dy3+ ions were co-doped with copper and tin oxides, or merely tin oxide, with the purpose of investigating on the sensitizing effects of ionic copper and tin species on the luminescence of Dy3+ ions in the matrix. The spectroscopic properties of the glasses, which were prepared by the melt-quenching technique, were assessed by optical absorption and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The data indicated the presence of single Cu+ ions and/or twofold-coordinated Sn centers as the copper- and tin-related luminescent species in the glasses. An enhanced Dy3+ ions luminescence was observed under UV excitation in the codoped glasses as compared to a purely Dy3+-doped reference. While no influence was suggested from the Cu+ ions, the data points towards twofold-coordinated Sn centers as sensitizers of Dy3+ luminescence in the glass host.",
