Jesuit Colleges in the Early 17th Century

Research output: Contribution to conferencePresentation

Abstract

Many of the earliest Jesuit colleges struggled to survive during their first decades. When the foundations were more or less settled -- when the buildings and funding were in place -- what was life like for students and teachers? The most pressing concerns of survival gave way to issues of stability, occasionally even expansion, and of influence on the region. I will explore the second generation of Jesuit colleges, focusing largely on Tuscany, in comparison to the "crisis mode" of the first generations.
