Abstract

An electrochemical microcell that can utilize a 70:30 mixture of HF and pyridine as both the solvent and the supporting electrolyte was constructed and interfaced with a computer for monitoring and control. 4-Nitrotoluene was selectively fluorinated in the cell in good yield and good conversion to give an 83:17 mixture of two monofluoro products, α-fluoro-4-nitrotoluene and 2-fluoro-5-nitrotoluene (a product of rearrangement).
