Abstract
Presented at The Learning Center, LLC
Press Release: The French Impressionists rebelled against academic classicism in the late 19th century and initiated the modern era in the history of art. These artists focused on scenes of modern life and studied nature while discarding two-millennia of artificial idealism. Works by Impressionists such as Monet, Degas, Renoir, Cassatt and Morisot reflect a unique sensitivity to real-life surroundings and subjects and establish the foundation for later avant-garde movements. This lecture is designed around the Telfair Museum’s current special exhibition, “Monet to Matisse: Masterworks of French Impressionism,” and will be followed by a docent-led tour of the gallery.
