Abstract
This chapter focuses on challenging and exploring the students' assumptions and stereotypes of superheroes through the lens of the MARVEL character, Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel. Using clips from the Disney+ series Ms. Marvel (2022), students will engage the context and origin story of Kamala Khan/ Ms. Marvel within her creative identity, family identity, and Islamic religious identity while negotiating her new-found superpowers. The exploration of the identity of the comic-based character is also juxtaposed with the students' examination of their systems and identities in similar circumstances, such as adolescence, creativity, friendship, gender, and religion. The lesson also explores the importance of using and applying symbols in the story of Ms. Marvel and the students' lives.
