Abstract

Aging of asphalt binders causes the changes in the microstructure of the asphalt binders, consequently, in the mechanical properties. In this study, aging of short-term and long-term was tested on both base and modified asphalt binders using rotating thin film oven (RTFO) and pressure ageing vessel (PAV), respectively. The changes in the nano-mechanical properties were measured using atomic force microscope (AFM) technology. The results indicated: (1) the nano-adhesive forces from AFM were increased for both base and modified asphalt binders after RTFO aging; and (2) the nano-adhesive force was reduced for both base and modified binder, but the former was reduced higher than the later after PAV aging.
