Abstract
For large scale finite element simulations, elements with few unknowns are attractive. However, the standard four node compatible displacement element and the three node triangular element show poor performance for problems with bending and for plane strain problems in the nearly incompressible limit. Using a modified Hu-Washizu variational formulation with enhanced strains we are able to derive elements which show excellent performance for linear and non-linear applications.
