Abstract

This session will discuss strategies for managing the first few years of an academic appointment. Among the topics we discuss are handling department and university politics; managing course and service obligations; developing teaching and research portfolios, including those involved in pre-tenure evaluations; expanding one’s research agenda and publishing outlets; coping with non-tenure appointments; considering alternative plans, including re-entering the job market and career prospects outside academe; developing support networks outside one’s department and school; and finding a holistically driven personal-professional balance.
