Abstract
A Raman scheme for optical-pulse group velocity reduction is applied to a pure lifetime broadened sodium atomic system. In addition to the significant reduction of group velocity, probe field loss and smaller pulse distortion, as expected for such a scheme, we also investigate possible dipole moment combinations for the optimum probe pulse propagation. We show that the nuclear spin of sodium atomic system and proper laser coupling scheme can conspire to dramatically reduce the influence of any nearby state in a multi-level system, making it a nearly perfect 3-level system.
