Organizational effectiveness measures and their relationship to donor contributions

Abstract

ThepurposeofthisstudywastoexaminetherelationshipbetweenorganizationaleffectivenessmeasuresanddonorcontributionsforNationalCollegiateAthleticAssociationDivisionIathleticdepartments.Forthisstudy,donorcontributionswereusedasaproxyfordonors’perceptionoforganizationaleffectivenessfortheseathleticdepartments.Usingacombinationofthegoalsattainmentmodel(Price,1972)andthestrategicconstituenciesmodel(Connolly,Conlon,&Deutsch,1980)theeffectivenessmeasuresusedwereathleticperformance,studentathletewelfare,andstudentathleteacademicsuccess.ThewholeofDivisionI,aswellasthethreesubdivisions,wereexaminedforthefive-yearperiodfrom2013to2017.Theresultsofhierarchicalmultiplelinearregressionssuggestedthatasignificantproportionofthevarianceindonorcontributionswaspredictedbyacombinationofathleticperformance,studentathletewelfare,andstudentathleteacademicsuccess.ThiswastrueforallofDivisionI,butvariedbysubdivision.Approximately60%ofvariancewaspredictedbythecombinationofeffectivenessmeasuresfortheFootballBowlSubdivision,12%fortheFootballChampionshipSubdivision(FCS),and20%forDivisionIwithoutfootball.StudentathleteacademicsuccessprovedtoonlybeasignificantpredictoronitsownfortheFCS.
