Abstract
This chapter explores working with multilingual students by expanding on the following key ideas: Multilingual learners engage in sophisticated and cognitively demanding processes in their daily lives, which educators need to recognize and support. Centering students’ cultural and linguistic resources helps them learn about themselves and each other, advancing cultural competence. Understanding how different languages function in schools and society is key to critical consciousness, and can move us towards a more humanizing pedagogy.
